Trump handing out warm meals to Florence victims

President Donald Trump sought to offer comfort Wednesday to families who suffered losses in Hurricane Florence, declaring "America grieves for you" as he arrived in North Carolina to survey damage left by the powerful storm.

At least one North Carolina dam has breached so far under the strain of Florence's flooding, but officials say no homes were affected. "The recovery effort will be massive, and it will take a long time to fix the damage and for the families to get back on their feet".

Jordan, who attended the University of North Carolina, will donate $1 million each to the American Red Cross and the Foundation for the Carolinas' Hurricane Florence Response Fund.

The death toll from Hurricane Florence has reached 32 while the rivers in the Carolinas continue to rise from the record-breaking storm. Officials say the van was traveling near the Little Pee Dee River, one of the bodies of water officials in SC are watching closely as water continues to poor into the state from upriver in North Carolina following the heavy rains of Florence.

"I know it was hard to leave home, and it is even harder to wait and wonder whether you even have a home to go back to", Gov. Roy Cooper said.

Although the storm is long gone, river flooding still poses a danger to the area.

President Trump said Tuesday that Democrats were intentionally playing politics with his Supreme Court nomination in waiting until the 11th hour to spring attempted sexual assault allegations on him.

The tragic incident occurred near the Little Pee Dee River, which continues to rise as water from upriver North Carolina makes its way into South Carolina's waterways. A woman blew a whistle each time drivers had to pull forward.

The Cape Fear River was expected to crest at 61.5 feet (19 metres), quadrupling its normal height, on Wednesday in Fayetteville, a city of 200,000 in the southern part of the state near the Fort Bragg army base, according to the National Weather Service.

Horry County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Brooke Holden says a sheriff's office van was carrying two detainees and two deputies from Conway to Darlington on Tuesday night when it was overtaken by flood waters. An olive-drab military forklift moved around huge pallets loaded with supplies.

North Carolina is among the top states in the nation in producing pork and poultry, with about 9 million hogs at any given time and 819 million chickens and 34 million turkeys raised each year.

Supplies have been brought into the city by big military trucks and helicopters, which also were used to pluck hundreds of desperate people from homes and other structures. Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said it was unclear if the bridge was threatened.

The governor said 16 rivers statewide were at major flood stage and more than 1,100 roads were closed.
