Google to underpin Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi infotainment from 2021

Android displays for cars get boost from Google and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi

This includes integration with the Google Play Store to download applications as well as Google Assistant for hands-free operation.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi has announced that it will launch a next-generation infotainment system in 2021, co-developed with tech giant Google.

For that, both Android and Google's cloud services will be called upon.

The displays will offer better integration of Google's maps, app store and voice-activated assistant from auto dashboards, and they'll start appearing in 2021. By the end of 2022, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi aim to have twelve new zero-emission electric vehicles on the road.

The brands are looking at cost for the system, and there likely will be a monthly fee.

Zablit said the agreement was just one of several steps in a "collaborative effort we will undertake with Google".

But as more cars become linked to the internet, automakers are finding suppliers who have better systems that can be updated, he said.

Google has been pushing heavily to make Android the operating system of choice for automakers, however, those same automakers have often pushed back due to Google's need for customer data.

Volvo is planning to integrate the Google Assistant and Google Maps natively into their Sensus infotainment system by 2020.

Google plans to embed Android in millions of cars by partnering with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Anyone who has struggled with a sluggish or hard head unit display in a vehicle will likely agree.

Shares in navigation system maker TomTom plunged 23 percent to 6.52 euros Tuesday on the Amsterdam stock exchange after the announcement as investors feared that the Dutch company's sales could be hit hard by the decision.
