The Woman Accusing Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh of Sexual Assault

Sixty-five women who say they have known Kavanaugh for over three decades also defended his character in the form of a letter sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday, before Ford came forward publicly.

Judiciary Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, (R) of Iowa, said Monday that he will "continue working on a way to hear her out in an appropriate, precedented, and respectful manner".

Two committee Republicans - all on the GOP side are men - Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of SC, said they wanted to hear more from Ford. "However, to provide ample transparency, we will hold a public hearing Monday to give these recent allegations a full airing", Grassley said.

But Trump acknowledged there could be a delay in approving the nominee as pressure built for Congress to reopen hearings to review the bombshell allegation. But she's evidently consulted him at least briefly, because Karina Borger, Murkowski's spokeswoman, said that "Senator Murkowski's brother didn't know Kavanaugh".

He described as "ridiculous" the suggestion that Kavanaugh might withdraw his candidacy. "I think he's very much on track". "If they delay a little bit just to make sure everybody's happy - they want to be happy". Ford told the Post Sunday that she and Kavanaugh were at a high school house party in the 1980s when Kavanaugh, who she says had been drinking, pinned her to a bed and groped her in an effort to pull off her clothes. GOP Maine Sen. Susan Collins tweeted that she wanted Kavanaugh and Ford to both testify under oath to the committee, but when she was contacted Sunday by CNN she wouldn't say if the vote should be postponed.

Kavanaugh noted in his denial Monday that the accusation was "from 36 years ago".

Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason weighed in on President Donald Trump's reaction to the controversy surrounding his Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The explosive assault claim makes the Supreme Court the latest United States institution to be rocked by fallout from the year-old #MeToo movement exposing sexual misconduct.

Trump orders Federal Bureau of Investigation documents, texts from Russian Federation probe declassified
The move was confirmed in a statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. It was not immediately clear when or how the documents would be released.

"This is something that should have been brought up long before this".

Mason then said the president "sort of followed the tone" of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, who said earlier in the day that Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Ford, "should not be insulted" or "ignored" while also defending the SCOTUS nominee. Heitkamp, who's facing a challenge from Cramer this fall, has not said how she'll vote.

If chosen for the lifetime appointment, Mr Kavanaugh would be expected to tilt the court's balance to the right.

It was not clear if the Republican-controlled Judiciary Committee would reopen hearings. After initially guarding her anonymity, Ford "decided to take control of this and tell this in her own voice" after the allegations were leaked, her lawyer said. "He stands ready to testify tomorrow if the Senate is ready to hear him", said White House spokesman Raj Shah. The attempted rape accusation comes only days before the Senate Judiciary Committee was slated to vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court.

"She is a person of integrity", Leahy said of Feinstein.

Asked if that included testimony under oath at a public hearing before senators, Katz told the CBS "This Morning" program: "She's willing to do what she needs to do".

She's under fire for having received a letter from Ms. Ford in July detailing the allegation, yet having sat on it until last week when, under pressure from fellow Democrats, she finally forwarded it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and publicly acknowledged it.

"We are not going to allow a last-minute smear campaign destroy a good and decent man who has an unblemished personal record", a conservative strategist told ABC News.
