Dozens Missing in Philippines After Landslide Triggered by Mangkhut

Super Typhoon Mangkhut: Most powerful storm on Earth in 2018 kills at least 14 in Philippines

Authorities in southern China issued a red alert, the most severe warning, as the national meteorological center said the densely populated region would face a "severe test caused by wind and rain" and urged officials to prepare for possible disasters. More than 1,400 flights had been cancelled across the region, according to Flight Aware.

A fallen tree caused by typhoon Mangkhut lies at a street in Hong Kong.

More than 13,500 households and businesses, mainly in the remote, rural areas of New Territories North, Yuen Long and Sai Kung, were still waiting for the restoration of power supplies.

The paper said the heavy rains brought storm surges of 3 meters (10 feet) around Hong Kong.

As the storm passed south of Hong Kong, trees were snapped in half and roads blocked, while some windows in tower blocks were smashed and skyscrapers swayed, as they are created to do in intense gales.

As roads and tunnels were left clogged with debris by Monday, a massive cleanup was started in Hong Kong.

Flights via Shenzhen Airport were all cancelled on Sunday until 8 am Monday.

Stock and financial markets opened as normal on Monday in Hong Kong and the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. It's only the 15th time in the last 60 years that a storm has been classified as T10; the last was for Super Typhoon Hato last year.

Vietnam was struck by a record-breaking number of 16 tropical storms previous year that left 389 people dead or missing and injured 668 others, mostly in northern and central regions.

Liverpool Spectacularly Lucky Not To Concede Late Penalty Vs Spurs
On this evidence, Spurs face another season of disappointment in the title race, but Liverpool are unquestionably the real deal. He was the only player that looked like he may give Liverpool a problem and could easily have equalised just after half-time.

That warning followed Mangkhut's devastating march through the northern Philippines on Saturday with sustained winds of 205 km/h.

As many as 2.45 million people in Guangdong province had been relocated on Sunday night, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Mr Palangdan said by phone that three villagers who almost got buried told authorities they saw residents rush into an old three-story building, a former mining bunkhouse that has been transformed into a chapel, at the height of the typhoon's onslaught on Saturday afternoon.

By then, Mangkhut had already left a swathe of destruction across the city, with many Hongkongers saying that it was the worst typhoon they had ever witnessed, with some high-rise buildings swaying due to the gale-force winds.

Police Superintendent Pelita Tacio said 34 villagers had died and 36 remained missing in the landslides in Ucab and another village in Itogon town. Men used pikes and shovels to dig into the mud because the soaked ground was unstable and limited the use of heavy equipment on site.

Philippine and Chinese authorities say the death toll from the super typhoon has risen to at least 69, with dozens missing.

The AP reports that the storm has killed at least 66 people in the Philippines.

Most of those were recorded in the Philippines, where a national police report said the death toll as of Monday midday was 65, with 43 people missing and 64 injured. Still, Philippines appeared to have been spared the high number of casualties. About 63,000 people have been affected, and the damage has not yet been fully assessed as numerous worst-hit areas are rural. Severe flooding has been reported in nine provinces. Around two to three storms will make landfall in Vietnam and batter the central region, they said.
