China braces for Typhoon after wreckage in Hong Kong

Volunteer rescuers head home after working to dig out victims of a landslide triggered by heavy rains from Typhoon Mangkhut in the Philippine's Benguet province on Monday

The storm was still affecting southern China's coast and the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan on Monday morning and rain and strong winds were expected to continue through Tuesday.

Both Vietnamese and worldwide weather stations have predicted that the storm turned depression will directly affect the northern and northern central regions.

"Landslides triggered by violent winds and torrential rain have already killed three people", she says.

Weather forecasters in Vietnam have predicted that four to six typhoons and tropical depressions could develop off the country's east coast from now until the end of the year.

At least 25 people have been killed in the Philippines in a trail of devastation left by Typhoon Mangkhut, mostly in landslides in mountainous areas, a presidential adviser said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, initial official estimates indicate that the Philippines lost 250,730 tonnes of padi rice due to the typhoon, exceeding a worst-case forecast by 60 per cent.

In China, meanwhile, Mangkhut continued its destructive path, with Hong Kong bracing for a storm that could be the strongest to hit the city since Typhoon York in 1999.

Hong Kong escaped the brunt although media reports showed images of apartment building windows being blown out, trees toppling, scaffolds collapsing and a crane falling off a building at a construction site. Dozens of people sought shelter there during the storm despite warnings it was unsafe.

Hong Kong residents were being told to stay away from the coastline and be on alert for occasional gales.

Just fewer than 400 people sought medical attention during and shortly after Mangkhut passed through Hong Kong.

Rescuers in the Philippines used shovels and their bare hands to claw through mounds of rocky soil yesterday as they looked for dozens of people feared buried beneath a landslide unleashed by super typhoon Mangkhut.

"I think most guests are understandably concerned about the strength of the storm, but I speak for myself and my family in that we believe we are safe here", said the Guangzhou-based journalist, adding that hotel staff have been very helpful. It was the most powerful typhoon to hit Hong Kong since 1979, packing winds of 195 kilometres per hour.

The China Meteorological Administration said the typhoon, dubbed "King of Storms", swept west to Guangxi at 6 a.m. and weakened to a tropical storm.

People in affected areas have been bracing for the storm for days, preparing by stockpiling food and water, taping up windows, and securing their belongings in anticipation of the storm surge.

The storm is expected to be one for Hong Kong's record books.
