Horrific details emerge in Jabari Bird assault case

Jabari Bird

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges of domestic assault, strangulation, and kidnapping.

Bird, a second-round pick out of California past year, has been accused of assaulting his girlfriend over a period of several hours and strangling her to the point where she lost consciousness. A month after the former second-round pick signed his first full-time National Basketball Association contract with the Celtics, the 24-year-old was arrested Saturday in Boston's Brighton neighbourhood on charges of domestic assault, strangulation and kidnapping.

The victim was taken to a separate hospital for treatment of "injuries sustained", police have said.

Police spoke with Bird's girlfriend, a student at a local college, at a city hospital after his arrest last Friday, prosecutor Khyati Short said during the hearing.

'The Celtics organization deplores domestic violence of any kind, and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird, ' the team said in a statement.

The Celtics will be working with the league and local authorities in assisting the ongoing investigation.

Evacuations in United States ahead of Hurricane Florence
A state of emergency has also been declared in Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington. Florence is being trailed in the Atlantic by two other storms - Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Isaac.

"I'm taking some time away from the team as I deal with my legal and medical issues", Bird said in a statement.

He is now free after posting $50,000 cash bail, and said in a statement that the full story of the incident is not yet been publicized.

The ordeal, sparked by what the woman called "trust issues, ' went on for several hours, she said, until Bird experienced 'seizure-like" symptoms and fell.

What is Bird's employment status with the Celtics?

The Celtics selected Bird with the No. 56 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

According to Boston Celtics beat reporter Tom Westerholm, Bird's release will be pending conditions, including no drugs or alcohol, no weapons, and court-ordered supervision. He is next due in court October 25. Police have not released details, including who the victim was or where the attack happened, citing a state law that bans police from discussing domestic violence investigations. Signed to a one-year, two-way contract, he spent the majority of his rookie season with Boston's G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Such was the case when former Detroit Pistons center Willie Reed was suspended for six games following a domestic battery arrest last summer.
