Flight carrying Kulsoom Nawazs body departs for Pakistan

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz wife of former premier Nawaz Sharif passed away in London on Tuesday after battling cancer for more than a year. — Geo News FILE

Her sons - Hassan and Hussain Nawaz - did not return to the country from London for the funeral.

A flight carrying Kulsoom Nawaz's casket landed in Lahore from London in the morning.

Kulsoom was diagnosed with lymphoma past year, barely a month after Nawaz was removed from office by the Supreme Court, which ordered him to face trial in an anti-corruption court. Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Capt (retd) M Safdar, now serving jail terms in the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after being convicted by an accountability court in a corruption case in July, have been released on parole to attend Kulsoom's funeral.

"The people who have ignited this fire will learn soon".

Shehbaz Sharif, the deceased's brother-in-law and president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), along with Begum Kulsoom's daughter Asma, grandson Zayd Hussain Sharif (Hussain Nawaz's son), and 11 other family members accompanied the body. The restricted area however has not been declared a sub-jail by the Home Department.

Sources inside Jattiumra say Nawaz Sharif saw his mother and a couple of other members of the family and spent most of the time quietly in his room.

The former prime minister was looking highly sad and exhausted.

Condolences continued to pour in for the Sharif family, upon Kulsoom Nawaz's demise.

People continued to arrive at Jati Umra to express grief and offer sympathy to the Sharif family. For the sake of uninterrupted traffic flow, special arrangements were also made outside Jattiumra.

However, Shehbaz persuaded them to avail release on parole as a legal right.

The three-time former prime minister, Maryam and Safdar were transported to Jati Umra on a special plane from Nur Khan Airbase Rawalpindi in the early hours of Wednesday after the Punjab government's home department issued their release order. "In case of a delay in Begum Kulsoom's funeral, the parole will be further extended", the spokesperson added.

Their parole was extended to 4 pm on September 17.
