Eagles Greatest Hits Overtakes Michael Jackson’s Thriller For Best-Selling Album Of All

The Eagles

Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 and Thriller have parried for the top position on that list for years.

As the Associated Press reports, Greatest Hits has now surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time in the US.

The compilation is now certified 38-times platinum, calculated by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) from a combination of album sales and streams.

Further proving the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers' vast popularity, The Eagles' other 1976 release, Hotel California, sits at No. 3 all-time at 26x platinum.

Shots Fired At US Embassy In Turkish Capital
He said defiantly, "Those who think they can make Turkey give in with the foreign exchange rate. will soon see they are wrong". The early morning attack coincided with a deepening row between the two countries over the trial of a US pastor in Turkey .

It's the first time the album has been re-evaluated since 2006. In 2016, "Thriller" regained the top position after reaching the 32x platinum mark, according to online RIAA records.

"Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" has sold 38 million units since its release in 1976, while MJ, whose 1982 opus was previously No. 1, has sold 33 million. The greatest hits comp held the top spot for almost a decade before it was surpassed by Jackson following his death in 2009. One platinum marker used to be equivalent to selling one million albums, but starting in 2013 the RIAA has incorporated streaming numbers from YouTube, Spotify, and other digital music services into their sales figures. "It's been quite a ride", the singer-songwriter added. Despite Drake's recent record-breaking effort, Scorpio, he has a long way to go before he even comes close to surpassing The Eagles.

As for how they go about counting the numbers, 1,500 streams of an album equal "one album sale" and 10 song downloads equal "1 album sale".
