Holidaymaker found 10 hours after falling from cruise ship

The woman fell from the Norwegian Star cruise ship 60 miles off the coast of Croatia

A British woman was saved in the Adriatic Sea after falling of a cruising ship. Three hours later she was spotted swimming more than a mile from where she went into the water - and more than 60 miles from shore - by rescuers on the helicopter.

The Croatian rescue ship sent out to look for her found her just 1,300 meters from where she fell.

The rescued passenger told the Croatian news channel HRT: "I am very lucky to be alive".

She added: "I am very lucky to be alive".

According to the Norwegian Cruise Line's website, the nearly 300-metre-long Norwegian Star was only refurbished this year and can accommodate up to 2,300 passengers.

A statement from Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that a guest had gone overboard while the ship was on its way from Vargarola to Venice.

The ship's captain, Lovro Oreskovic, said that she was exhausted.

She fell from a Norwegian Star cruise ship (stock picture) at around midnight on Saturday.

It said: "We are pleased to advise that the guest was found alive, is now in stable condition, and has been taken ashore in Croatia for further treatment". The 33-year-old man, believed to be from the Philippines, was rescued 22 hours later after being found 42km outside the coastguard search zone in July. The vessel was coming towards the end of the voyage and was sailing back to its home port when the woman fell overboard. the ship is scheduled to arrive back in Venice on August 19.

She was taken to hospital in the city of Pula, where she was said to be in a stable condition.
