Uganda's Bobi Wine due to appear before a military court. 'for treason'

In Uganda a pop star takes on a president at his peril

Kyagulanyi was arrested following campaign violence in Arua Municipality in which President Museveni's convoy was attacked by opposition supporters.

Sporting a badly swollen face Kyagulani was charged in the presence of only two of his lawyers and was unable to make a plea because of being in poor physical condition due to what his wife said was torture by the police.

The MPs were in Arua to campaign for opposition-leaning MP Kassiano Wadri, and in the chaos that ensued, President Museveni said, the auto that carries his luggage was stoned. Then he was arrested, and he hasn't been seen in public since.

On Thursday, Kyagulanyi's supporters in the Kamwokya area of the capital, Kampala, where he is MP, burned tyres as they protested his detention. In a court session closed to reporters, he was remanded and will reappear on 23 August, the military said in a statement.

A Ugandan police spokesman stated that the politician was arrested after an incident in which security officers shot dead his driver. "It is hard to say whether he understands this and that".

The musician and opposition lawmaker was taken into custody yesterday and is now being charged with treason.

Four planes make emergency landings in Chile and Peru after bomb threats
According to officials in Peru, no passengers were injured and the situation is under control. Prosecutor Eduardo Baeza said Sepulveda Robles made threats that affected 11 flights.

Many Ugandans expressed concern for Kyagulanyi's safety after Uganda's deputy prime minister told legislators he had been admitted to hospital in custody, without giving details.

Kyagulanyi, who is his 30s and was elected to parliament a year ago, has emerged as a powerful voice with his calls for young people to "stand up" and take over this East African country from what he calls the current government's failed leadership.

Despite murmurs about his wild past and inexperience in politics, his approach appears to be working: All of the candidates he has backed in strongly contested legislative by-elections this year have emerged victorious. "We don't know where or how he is", Mr Basalirwa said. Beaten and bruised, often literally, opposition politicians have largely retreated as the 74-year-old Museveni pursues an even longer stay in power.

Museveni, who took power by force in 1986, is now able to rule into the 2030s.

The beating of Ssentamu, however, has only boosted his popularity and led to calls for a presidential run in 2021.

A trial before a military court is likely to be drawn out over months and possibly years, impeding his political activities.
