Man charged with attempted murder after Westminster crash

Salih Khater, 29, from Birmingham, is alleged to have swerved his auto into cyclists and pedestrians shortly after 07:30 BST on 14 August.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after a vehicle was driven at pedestrians and cyclists in the heart of Westminster on Tuesday.

Police described the incident as an act of terrorism on the grounds of its location, methodology and alleged targeting of civilians and police officers.

Khater is charged with two counts of attempted murder. Police say that was an attempt to murder police officers.

The Metropolitan Police's counter-terror head Neil Basu earlier said Khater was not co-operating, while the priority of the investigation team continues to be to understand the motivation.

Prosecutors are treating the incident on Tuesday as terrorism, Scotland Yard said.

The Fiesta used in the alleged attack was driven from Birmingham to London late on Monday and spent nearly five hours in the Tottenham Court Road area.

He then crashed into barriers outside the Palace of Westminster and was arrested.

The vehicle continued on before crashing into a security barrier on the perimeter of the iconic building.

One injured person was treated at the scene and two were taken to local hospitals, where they were treated and released.
