Jury in Paul Manafort's Case Asks Judge to Redefine 'Reasonable Doubt'

Attorney Kevin Downing with the defense team for Paul Manafort leaves federal court during the second day of jury deliberations in the trial of the

WASHINGTON-President Trump called the trial of his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort "very sad" on Friday as the jury kicked off its second day of deliberations.

Ellis explained that he intends to unseal most of the transcripts after the trial, but added that some of them will remain under seal so as not to interfere with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into claims of President Donald Trump's "collusion" with Russian Federation during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The six men and six women considered the charges against Manafort for around seven hours in the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia.

While allegations of collusion are still being investigated, evidence of bank fraud and tax evasion unearthed during the probe has cast doubt on the integrity of Mr Trump's closest advisers during the campaign.

In that testimony, an agent from the federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network said multiple people could be required to file foreign banking disclosures on an account.

No one should have harbored illusions about a quick turnaround from the jury.

"Quick verdicts are not generally associated with lengthy, document-heavy white-collar prosecutions", he said.

Manafort is now waiting for a jury to return a verdict in a financial crimes trial that could send him to jail for the rest of his life.

"You have to come to a conclusion on all 18", the former prosecutor said.

The last question involved how the list of exhibits matched the indictment.

"The fact that they are sending questions on reasonable doubt tells me that the group is divided", said jury consultant Alexandra Rudolph.

After noting that the one wildcard in the Manafort case is politics, Callan said that as a prosecutor he would worry "if there is somebody on that jury that is a diehard Trump fan you have the President of the United States making comments". Under U.S. law, the guilt of the accused must be proven "beyond a reasonable doubt" or there can be no conviction. In a criminal case, a jury must find a defendant guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt". Ellis denied the request, saying the jurors needed to rely on their own judgement of which documents related to certain counts.

Jurors submitted their questions roughly 10 minutes before 5 p.m. Thursday.

Jurors in the trial are not sequestered but have been instructed not to watch news reports or talk to others about the matter.

Trump says 'nothing to hide' from Special Counsel Mueller
As well as collusion, the special counsel is scrutinising whether there were any attempts by the president to obstruct justice. In yet another tweet he added, "This is why the Fake News Media has become the Enemy of the People".
