Coles stores closed due to register glitch

Coles has apologised after several of its supermarkets across Australia were forced to close because of a technical glitch.

"We apologise. This store is now closed due to circumstances beyond our control", read a sign outside Coles Australia Fair on the Gold Coast.

"Earlier this morning we had some minor IT problems in some of our supermarkets which were out of our team members' control", a statement read.

Frustrated shoppers took to social media after turning up to do their groceries, only to find a note taped to the front doors.

Thousands of customers across the country were inconvenienced when Coles announced an unexpected closure of stores due to an IT glitch.

It's understood not all stores are closed.
