Chipotle To Retrain Employees After Latest Outbreak Of Food Poisoning

Chipotle to reopen stores after testing negative for E. coli

The Delaware General Health District determined through stool samples that clostridium perfringens was the cause of the outbreak that sickened at least 647 people who ate at a Chipotle in Powell, Ohio, recently.

Customers who reported getting ill after eating at the restaurant visited the location between July 26 and July 30, according to the Delaware General Health District.

The outbreak that occurred last month was caused by clostridium perfringen, a type of food-borne disease that occurs when food is left at unsafe temperatures, health officials at OH said in a statement.

"A specific food has not been able to be identified as the source of illness", the department said, adding that ongoing food and stool testing is being conducted by a federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory. "To ensure consistent food safety execution, we will be adding to our daily food safety routines a recurring employee knowledge assessment of our rigorous food safety standards".

The outbreak in OH is the latest of several in recent years that have hit the restaurant chain, sickening hundreds of customers.

All staff at Chipotle's US Mexican Grill restaurants are to be retrained in food safety procedures after a series of food poisoning incidents.

The CDC notes that the toxin usually develops when someone eats food that has been stored at the wrong temperature after cooking.

Niccol, who took the helm following Chipotle founder Steve Ells departure last November after the company faced multiple food illness outbreaks dating back to 2013, has been tasked with turning the burrito chain around.

Chipotle shares fell about 1 percent afternoon trading.
