Aretha Franklin dies in Detroit, surrounded by family and friends

In 1970

Dubbed the "Queen of Soul", her signature song, a 1967 rendition of Otis Redding's "Respect", was so powerful that Redding himself stopped playing his version after hearing it. Franklin's version become an anthem for the American Civil Rights and Women's Rights movements.

Aretha was born in Memphis, Tenn. on March 25, 1942. Aretha is the couple's second child.

King was a frequent guest in her father's home.

Aretha Franklin passed away at her home in Detroit on Thursday, and the world not only lost the Queen of Soul, but a shade queen as well.

Franklin also received global acclaim for her memorable 2006 Thanksgiving Day performance before the Lions played the Minnesota Vikings.

In recent years she was doted for showing up when called upon, either at ceremonies celebrating the past, or at Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration where she famously wore a metric ton of fabric on her head. Five of her songs are in the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was an important event because it signalled the community's desire to move towards inclusion.

Trump did not explain further when he said he knew Franklin well and she "worked for" him. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then president George W. Bush in 2005.

The music world has had a few days to brace for the loss of arguably the greatest singer of all time, Aretha Franklin. But Franklin also inspired a range of gospel artists, from Richard Smallwood and The Hawkins Family to artists who came after them, such as Karen Clark Sheard, Donald Lawrence and Anita Wilson.

Franklin, who had announced retirement plans in 2017, had hoped to continue touring in 2018. She later received two honorary doctorates of music, from Berklee College of Music and Yale University.

Earlier, in 2013, she told The Associated Press that her healing from an undisclosed condition was considered "absolutely miraculous" after she had been ill for several months. Family asked for "prayers and privacy".
