China says will assess US defense policy bill

"It was my great honour to sign our new Defence Bill into law and to pay tribute to the greatest soldiers in the history of the world: THE U.S".

Donald Trump thanked members of the Congress who helped pass the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act with the signing ceremony taking place at Fort Drum, New York on Monday.

China and the U.S. are now locked in a trade war following Trump's slapping of additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, as well as dozens of Chinese-made products.

"We resolutely oppose any form of official or military contact between the United States and Taiwan, including USA arms sales to Taiwan", Ma said.

Some lawmakers wanted to use the bill to reinstate tough sanctions on ZTE to punish the company for illegally shipping products to Iran and North Korea, but the restrictions included in the final National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, that passed Congress were weaker than earlier versions of the bill. United States intelligence agencies had also voiced concern that ZTE and Huawai were too close to the Chinese government and posed an espionage risk.

In addition to raising wages for troops - the largest such rise in 10 years, and investing heavily in advanced weapons technologies, such as the F-35 fifth generation stealth fighter jet - the act also boosts the capacity of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, in particular to curb the large number of Chinese investments in the US.

Inclusion of the measure was seen as a bid to target China.

It includes an amendment prohibiting sales to Turkey of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets until the Pentagon issues a report on Turkish-American relations in 90 days.

Prior to the ceremony Trump watched an air assault demonstration by USA troops at Fort Drum.

"We will not allow anyone to split Taiwan from China in any way or at any time", A spokesperson for the Chinese ministry of defense, Senior Colonel Wu Qian was quoted as saying by Chinamil Tuesday.

"The governments of the two countries should listen to the voices of the companies, and provide a good environment and stable expectations".
