Bolton meets Turkish ambassador amid Brunson deadlock

Trump and Erdogan

Brunson, who has been living in Turkey for more than two decades, was accused of helping supporters of Fethullah Gulen, the US -based cleric who Turkish authorities say masterminded the 2016 coup attempt against President Tayyip Erdogan.

"At the Turkish ambassador's request, Ambassador John Bolton met with Ambassador Serdar Kilic of Turkey today in the White House".

The Turkish lira pulled back on Tuesday from a record low hit a day earlier, helped by the central bank's liquidity measures and news of a planned conference call in which the finance minister will seek to reassure investors. Trump doubled tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum imports last week, contributing to a precipitous fall in the lira.

Relations between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have spiraled into a full-blown crisis over the trial of Christian pastor Andrew Brunson, who was held for 21 months in a Turkish prison until his transfer to house arrest last month - a move Washington dismissed as insufficient.

The sanctions were imposed by the White House in August. The White House followed through on August 1 and sanctioned two top Turkish officials.

Argentina drop six places to 11th but Russian Federation are the biggest climbers, having risen 21 spots to 49th. Mohamed Salah's Egypt, eliminated in the group stages, fall 20 places to 65th, the largest fall of any team.

"The fact that there's ongoing discussions between the two countries regarding Brunson's return to the U.S.is positive", said Jay Sekulow, an attorney for U.S. President Donald Trump who is also representing Brunson's family.

Turkey has "solid and strong" economic dynamics in the face of the recent "economic siege" on the country, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday.

Turkish authorities moved Brunson to house arrest after the pastor spent more than a year in jail awaiting the result of a trial.

Brunson was arrested in October 2016, after Turkey accused him of aiding terrorist organizations. Ankara has vowed to buy liquid natural gas from Iran in defiance of Washington sanctions.

Relations between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies Turkey and the United States are at a low point, hurt by Brunson's detention, as well as diverging interests in Syria.
