Question of the Day: Will changes to Oscars improve ceremony?

The category for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film will be introduced at the 2019 Oscars, which is staged on 24 February.

In an attempt to save Oscar ratings, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a series of new changes and additions that haven't sat quite well with the industry.

It's already clear, however, what the goal of this award is: give blockbuster pictures a chance to walk away with their own Oscar trophies. But that doesn't mean that the desperation of the Oscars won't come back to bite them in the butt when trying something new.

Some argue that creating a popular-film category will relegate all blockbusters and genre-y movies-think "Black Panther" and "Mission: Impossible"-to this new, seemingly second-rate group". Not to be confused with the "Best Picture" award, the additional category is causing quite the uproar on social media.

B.C. adds 11200 jobs in July, erasing previous month's losses
Today's focus will be on Canada's jobless rate as Stats Can is set to release July's employment numbers. Despite that growth in the job market, only an estimated 200 jobs were added since end of July 2017.

Although the 2018 Oscars hit an all-time low in TV ratings, it's worth noting that those numbers reflect a broader trend in live TV: the Super Bowl, the Grammys, the Emmys and the Olympics all reported declines in viewership this year. It's not that big blockbusters don't get nominated for or win Oscars, but that doesn't always happen, and the Best Picture category has typically been reserved for indie flicks with critical acclaim and so-so revenue. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the ceremony also clocked it at almost four hours, making it the longest show in over a decade. Specific categories will be determined at a later date, but the film academy said the off-air winning moments will be edited and aired in a later broadcast. Honoring only some defeats the objective of a once great award show. The 2018 best picture victor, "The Shape of Water", had grossed $57.4 million in the United States by the time the awards aired and $63.9 million total.

The Academy could have waited to see the impact on the best picture race from its push to diversify its membership, Willmore said.

This is the first in the last 17 years the change in the nominations.
