England beat India by an innings and 159 runs

Cricket | Steve James August 11 2018 12:01am The Times India self-destruct as Cheteshwar Pujara’s run-out nightmare continues Steve James

In 17 Tests since Joe Root became captain, England have been dismissed for under 300 in their first innings seven times. They needed 289 runs to make England bat again after the home side declared their first innings closed at 396 for seven in the morning session.

Joe Root won the toss on day 2 and with the kind of environment around the decision to bowl first nearly sealed the game in England's favour. Under leaden skies it was a good toss to win, but England exploited the conditions to the full - CricViz calculated that they found 1.2º of swing, the most they've found in any Test since Australia were decimated at Trent Bridge in 2015 - India simply had no answer.

England, who ended at 357-6 at Stumps on Day Three, have a huge lead of 250 runs which can prove to be sufficient to bowl out the Indian team in the second innings, considering the batting form the visitors are in.

Man of the Match, Chris Woakes: "I am delighted".

Their unbroken sixth-wicket stand was so far worth 99 runs and all the more valuable for the fact that England had slumped to 89 for four on the stroke of lunch.

Indian captain Virat Kohli after the defeat said:Not proud of the way we've played. Struggling to even move Virat Kohli walked out to bat but was accounted for by the same bowler.

B.C. adds 11200 jobs in July, erasing previous month's losses
Today's focus will be on Canada's jobless rate as Stats Can is set to release July's employment numbers. Despite that growth in the job market, only an estimated 200 jobs were added since end of July 2017.

The only question then was whether India could take the game into a final day but the answer emphatically was that they could not, with Anderson again magnificent in going past 100 wickets at Lord's and Woakes again superb.

Stokes and Sam Curran - the player preferred to Woakes for the first test at Edgbaston - both impressed as England won with a day to spare despite Thursday being completely washed out.

As well as reaching the Lord's milestone, the dismissal - Anderson's 96th against India - made him the highest wicket-taker in test matches between the two nations.

Number three Cheteshwar Pujara, who did not play in the first Test, battled for the best part of 24 overs before his resistance was finally breached by a beauty from Broad that nipped back and bowled him through the gate. He was given out caught behind when the ball brushed his glove and Karthik was lbw to the next ball. Even when the ball's doing a bit, you have to pitch it in the right areas.

"It's not about batting on flat surfaces, I enjoyed playing on surfaces that were given to us, more so when it was an attacking field", he said.

Anderson took his tally for the match to nine wickets by removing Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami for ducks, before Woakes fittingly finished the job with Ishant Sharma caught at leg slip to put the hosts in firm control of the series.
