Will Muschamp slams 'gutless' reporting of Maryland football allegations

Maryland Coach DJ Durkin speaks during last month’s Big Ten Conference media days

Maryland coach DJ Durkin has been placed on immediate administrative leave by the Terrapins following a detailed report alleging a harmful culture around the football program. Matt Canada will serve as interim head coach.

The most notable instance in the report involved Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died in June as a result of a heat stroke caused from exhaustive sprints in a team workout just two weeks prior.

"At this time, the best decision for our football program is to place".

UMD's football program came under scrutiny this year after McNair, a 19-year-old offensive linebacker, was hospitalized following a team workout and later died at the hospital.

Ben Jealous, a candidate for Maryland governor, is also calling for the suspensions of Durkin and Evans, until an investigation into McNair's death has been finished. "This is effective immediately", athletic director Damon Evans said in a statement.

NCAA Unveils A Number Of Major Changes To Rules & Policies
Furthermore, reports have surfaced that USA Basketball isn't interested in grading high school players as "elite" or not. The NCAA has announced changes to rules regarding highly-touted basketball prospects.

"The external review into the tragic death of Jordan McNair continues, and we have committed to releasing publicly the report being generated by an independent and national expert". The report from ESPN shared the scary details surrounding McNair's death, which called into question the Maryland training staff. The story relied on anonymous former players and others close to the program, which Muschamp took particular issue with when asked about the story. "If that former staffer had any guts, why didn't he put his name on that?"

Muschamp also addressed allegations from anonymous players, questioning their veracity and the players' motives.

Court was placed on paid leave as part of the investigation into the article's claims, The Associated Press reported Saturday, citing an anonymous source.

"The alleged behaviors raised in the ESPN story are troubling and not consistent with our approach to the coaching and development of our student athletes", the university had said in an earlier statement to ESPN.
