Ronaldo owns property on Ibiza, a Spanish Mediterranean island, and is a frequent visitor.

Symptoms - which include a cough and difficulty breathing - can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours. Throughout a prosperous career, he scored 62 goals in 98 worldwide appearances for Brazil.

He hit eight goals and scored in every match in Brazil's 2002 World Cup win apart from the quarter-finals en route to lifting the trophy in Japan.

The former Real Madrid forward, who also played for Barcelona, Inter Milan and AC Milan, thanked his fans for their love and well wishes.

During his playing career, Ronaldo was famous for his blistering pace and phenomenal goal-scoring record. He has suffered since the end of his career with a thyroid problem that has caused him to gain a lot of weight, and back in 2012 he contracted Dengue fever and was admitted to hospital.
