DC, Charlottesville on edge as white nationalists prepare to rally

White nationalists participate in a torch-lit march on the grounds of the University of Virginia ahead of the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville Virginia

US President Donald Trump has moved to condemn "all types of racism and acts of violence" one year on from the alt-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that left one woman dead.

Sunday is the first anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally, the white supremacist march that boiled into a chaotic clash between protesters and counter-protesters, injuring dozens.

In the wake of the demonstrations, Mr Trump said that there was "blame on both sides" for the violence.

Activists were holding a rally in Charlottesville Saturday to commemorate last year's tragedy, amid heavy police presence in the town. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence.

President Trump is urging "peace to all Americans" as cities across the United States are bracing for Unite the Right 2018 marches this weekend.

The rally turned violent and Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old legal assistant, was struck and killed when a white supremacist slammed his vehicle into a crowd of counterprotesters.

National Public Radio faced wide criticism on Friday for running an interview with Kessler in which he recited white nationalist talking points and ranked the intelligence of different races on air.

On the day's itinerary were several remembrance events, including a "morning of reflection and renewal", a poetry session, and an appearance by University of Virginia President James Ryan, who was on deck to speak. "And we will also continue to pray - in these too divided times - that Americans will come together in new and renewed ways in this one Nation under God with liberty and justice for All".

Workers enclose a statue of Robert E. Lee near downtown Charlottesville, Va. She said she has activated emergency operations aimed at protecting property and people. Though there were no white nationalist events scheduled, many feared a repeat of past year, when authorities were blasted for being underprepared for the violence that broke out. The conflict culminated in the death of Heather Heyer, 32, when James Alex Fields Jr., whose social media accounts included posts espousing white supremacy, purposely drove his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters.

Both Market Street Park, where last year's rally was held, and Court Square Park will be completely fenced off, according to city spokesman Brian Wheeler.

Two state police personnel - Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates - died in a helicopter crash responding to the scene. Carlson, 22, said she feared for her life when she and a group of her friends were surrounded by the phalanx of young white men at the statue.

White nationalists are again planning to rally Sunday, this year at Lafayette Park, just across from the White House, where a large counter protest is also scheduled.

Carlson said police didn't intervene to help her or her friends that night previous year.

Students say they're disgusted with the school because it didn't waive medical feels for last year's rally victims.

Earlier this week, Gov. Ralph Northam issued a state of emergency saying "the related planned events will help us ensure that the state and the city have all available resources to support emergency responders in case they're needed".
