Turkey's Erdogan calls on Turks to buy lira for 'national battle'

Turkey fails to resolve disputes with US

The lira, which has lost a third of its value this year, fell on his comments and was trading at around 6.05 to the dollar after he spoke, almost 9 percent weaker on the day.

Turkey has arrested an American pastor and put him on trial for espionage and terror-related charges linked to a failed coup attempt in the country two years ago.

The lira tumbled 13% in one day, to 6.51 per United States dollar, a massive move for a currency that will make the Turkish poorer and further shake worldwide investors' confidence in the country.

"The dollar can not block our path".

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addresses his supporters in Bayburt, Turkey, Friday, Aug. 10, 2018.

'However, I say it once again from here.

Paul Greer at Fidelity International said dramatic interventions were now needed as Turkey faced a "downward spiral" of investor confidence.

President Donald Trump's decision to double US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Turkey is "brutal", director of the European Council on Foreign Relations said.

Without naming countries, Erdogan said supporters of a failed military coup two years ago, which Ankara says was organized by a US -based Muslim cleric, were attacking Turkey in new ways since his re-election two months ago.

"There are various campaigns being carried out". We are working hard.

Turkey currency crashes as Trump doubles metals tariffs
Mr Erdogan has been putting pressure on the central bank to not raise interest rates in order to keep fuelling economic growth. TURKS have been hitting bureau de changes, after being ordered to sell their gold and dollars to support the crumbling Lira .

For a brief moment the Russian ruble looked like it would be an exception to the rule of currency market weakness, with the currency trying to regain its initial losses in the aftermath of new USA sanctions on Russia a few days back, but I would expect the ruble to remain under pressure as "risk off" limits attraction to emerging assets.

Mr Erdogan held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately after the tariffs announcement, and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov is expected in Turkey on Monday.

Sweating profusely during his speech, and refusing to take questions afterwards, Albayrak backed the independence of the country's central bank.

He said: "I refrain from talking about the Central Bank as much as I can and when I have to speak, I use a sensitive language".

And it remains unclear if the bank would be willing to sharply lift rates, with analysts saying the nominally independent institution is under the influence of Erdogan, who wants low rates to keep growth humming.

The two countries are also divided over the detention of three locally employed USA consular staff, Washington's sanctions on Iran, Turkey's plans to buy a Russian missile defense system, and their military interventions in Syria.

They are also concerned over the central bank's ability to rein in persistent double-digit inflation with the president repeatedly calling for lower rates.

Where has Erdogan's "economic miracle" gone? . "Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!" They include BBVA, UniCredit, and BNP Paribas, and the exposure to those lenders is being closely watched, the Financial Times reported. As the lira falls in value, the debt becomes harder to pay. Earlier, it had crashed some 12 percent through the 6.00 level for the first time in history, trading at one point at more than 6.20 lira per dollar. It was eight lira in 2006.

That indicates that people are buying dollars and euros, not selling them off - and that they're not finding buyers in lira, anyway. Some 4 million displaced people, most them from Syria, are now living in Turkey.
