Former Tour de France victor Jan Ullrich arrested for 'attacking prostitute'

CYC ULLRICH

German police have detained former cyclist and Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich for allegedly attacking and injuring a woman in a Frankfurt luxury hotel, a police spokesperson said. But he was back in a police cell on Friday after being arrested in the early hours of the morning at the five-star Villa Kennedy hotel in Frankfurt. She alerted the hotel staff and they called police.

News agency dpa reported that the 44-year-old Ullrich had been arrested the week before in Mallorca, where he lives, after an incident on the property of his neighbour, actor Til Schweiger.

Schweiger, best known to worldwide audiences as Sgt Hugo Stiglitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, told German media that the pair used to be close.

On Monday, Ullrich had told the German tabloid Bild of personal problems: "The separation from [wife] Sara and distance from my children, whom I have not seen since Easter and have barely spoken to, have had a great effect on me". I took nothing that the others didn't also take.

Transfer: Manchester United in talks to sign Chelsea defender
Everton were linked with a deadline day loan swoop for Chelsea's Premier League youngster Kurt Zouma , but the transfer window has now closed.

Ullrich was questioned by a judge on Saturday, and subsequently released and given a restraining order, a court spokeswoman said.

He is the only German cyclist to win the Tour de France, and he also won a gold medal in the road race and a silver in the time trial at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

But he was then embroiled in doping allegations and excluded from the 2006 Tour de France over his links to the Operation Puerto scandal that centred on disgraced doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, who gave performance-enhancing blood transfusions to top cyclists.

Ullrich finally came clean in 2013 about his doping past.
