Perseid meteor shower to peak over Canada this weekend

Meteor showers are caused when meteoroids, who were once part of a comet or asteroid, start hitting Earth's atmosphere in streams. The peak will be from 9.00 pm on Sunday 12th August to 4.30 am on Monday 13th August.

If you're planning on watching the Perseid meteor shower, bear in mind that it will take at least 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

The Perseids are part of the 16-mile comet Swift-Tuttle's trail of dust, and they're named after the constellation Perseus, according to the American Meteor Society. The Perseids happen every year, but this year's crescent moon will make the sky darker, allowing the meteors to shine.

"Preparations have been finalised where visitors can lay back and relax to watch the complete Perseid Meteor Shower from our desert Majlis setting, without the need or use of any special equipment or telescopes, though visitors are free to choose whether or not to bring one", said Alsuwaidi. In those cases they can actually predict that when the Earth passes through the orbital path of the comet there will be a higher than average debris field. And if you find yourself looking up into the sky in a clear, dark place, you could see from 50 to 100 meteors zipping through the sky every hour, according to NASA. Bill Cooke, a scientist at NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office in Alabama, framed the phenomenon well in a 2016 interview with NASA.

Although the shower peaks on August 12, you'll be able to see a good deal of shooting stars all weekend and into Monday. Unfortunately, there's always the chance that bad weather like fog or rain will create unfavorable viewing conditions.

Capturing the fleeting light show requires some luck as meteors quickly strike through the starry skies.

"If you have seen a few of them you have seen them all", he said.

If you want to catch a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower, then it's worth finding a dark location; light pollution will inhibit your view of the meteor shower.
