North Korea threatens to stall denuclearization in warning to US

But it accused unidentified high-level USA officials of "going against the intention of President Trump" by "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".

The president has also repeatedly defended Kim's intentions, tweeting last month that he was "confident" the leader would "honor the contract we signed &, even more importantly, our handshake".

Earlier this month, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Russia, China and other countries against any violation of worldwide sanctions on North Korea that could reduce pressure on the North to abandon its nuclear weapons.

Trump has hailed North Korea's moves since his historic summit with leader Kim Jong Un during a summit in Singapore in June, where the US agreed to provide unspecified security guarantees in exchange for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

The two sides vowed at that time to work towards North Korea's denuclearisation but have struggled to reach a deal to meet that goal, with the United States insisting that sanctions pressure must be maintained during negotiations.

On Wednesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that the United States was "not willing to wait for too long" for North Korea to take steps towards denuclearising. "It's just North Korea that has not taken the steps we feel are necessary to denuclearize".

Ri traveled this week to Iran, where President Hassan Rouhani told him the United States can not be trusted after the Trump administration reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's own nuclear program.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told a regular briefing on Thursday that the United States was in touch with North Korea virtually every day or other day but had no travel plans to announce for the moment.

The North Korean government said in a statement through its mission to the United Nations that it has halted nuclear missile tests, dismantled a nuclear test site and begun to return the remains of Americans killed in the Korean War, but lamented continued criticism from US officials.

But, following the meeting, US intelligence officials said they believed North Korea was "deceiving" the USA, saying the regime was bolstering production for nuclear weapons at "multiple secret sites" in recent months.

North Korea has removed some of the remaining structures at Sohae Satellite Launching Station, according to a 38 North analysis of satellite photos on Tuesday.

Still, North Korea said it remains steadfast in its commitment to building trust and implementing in good faith the joint statement step by step.
