James Bond producers eyeing Idris Elba as next 007

During the chat, Broccoli stated "it was time" for a non-white actor to take up the mantle of 007 and that "it will happen eventually", with Fuque even going as far as explicitly tipping his hat towards Idris Elba as the leading candidate for the role. Elba's name first came up in 2014 during the Sony hack, when leaked emails from then studio co-chair Amy Pascal revealed Elba as everyone's favourite to replace Daniel Craig.

In Pacific Rim, Idris Elba displayed the commanding presence required of James Bond. However, given the length of time it took the actor to be confirmed in the role and the fact that he has played Bond for well over a decade now, it seems unlikely that he will be back for a sixth film.

As for Elba's own ideas about who could be the next Bond, earlier this year he discussed the idea of a woman taking on the role with Variety.

Elba also plays the title role in British crime drama Luther, voiced Chief Bogo in Zootopia, plays Heimdall in the Marvel movies, and famously cancelled the apocalypse in 2013's Pacific Rim.

There has been a bonafide grassroots movement to get Elba a role as Bond.

Universal Pictures also won the global distribution rights to the film, which will drop in the United Kingdom first on October 25, 2019.

'We will begin shooting Bond 25 at Pinewood Studios in December with our partners at MGM and thrilled that Universal will be our worldwide distributor.
