Collomb, the interior minister, said in a statement that 1,600 people were evacuated as a precaution in the Gard, the Ardeche and the Drome regions.

A 70-year-old German man was said to be missing after reportedly being swept away inside his van at one campsite.

Trapped by a muddy, fast-flowing torrent after the Ardeche river burst its banks he sought shelter inside his caravan, but the vehicle was swept away.

Some 750 people were evacuated from five campsites after torrential rain swelled rivers in the Gard region, with four German children also taken to hospital with hypothermia.

Almost 120 children were evacuated from the site as emergency teams helped around 750 people to safety across the Gard region.

The Gard is hugely popular with British holidaymakers in August, while many others from the United Kingdom have retired to the area, or have second homes there.

The missing German was supervising the children at the camp.

Hundreds of firefighters and police took part in the rescue operations, using helicopters to help spot affected campsites and carry out some people.

The French weather service has issued orange and yellow alerts for parts of southeast France that will remain in place until 4pm.

UK Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said almost 3in of rain fell over the area in 24 hours. Around 17,000 homes in the southwest and northeast were without power.
