Bolt joins Central Coast Mariners on an 'indefinite training period'

Usain Bolt will train with the Central Coast Mariners

"It has been my dream to play professional football and I know that it will involve a lot of hard work and training to get to the level required to play and make an impact in the A-League.

"We've heard that every time he's been training with them he's made dramatic improvements while he was there", Mielekamp said.

Bolt will train ‘for an indefinite period' with the rest of the staff, the team said in a statement, adding the agreement does not guarantee him a contract as a professional football player, but gives him the opportunity to achieve his great goal of being part of a club.

"I look forward to the challenge", Bolt said.

Usain Bolt's dream of becoming a professional footballer received a big fillip when the Aussie club Central Coast Mariners announced that the former sprinter will join it on an "indefinite training period".

Soon after retiring from athletics a year ago, Bolt went to work on his second career, training with Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Mamelodi Sundowns FC in South Africa, and Norwegian club Strømsgodset.

Football Federation Australia responded last month with caution when reports emerged of Bolt's hopes to play in the A-League.

Mulvey insisted the eight-time Olympic gold medallist would be treated as if he was any other player, saying it was nothing out of the ordinary for potential signings to be asked to train with the club for several weeks before being offered a deal.

The club's CEO Shaun Mielekamp said having Bolt visit would align with the Mariners' philosophy of being an innovative, entertaining and community-minded sports brand.

"Whilst we all know this must be tempered with the reality that there is a job to do and hard work ahead, we are committed to building a team that will win matches and instil belief".

The A-League season opens in October.
