WhatsApp rolls out forwarded message limit for India

WhatsApp has already been criticised for not doing enough to halt the spread of fake news and misinformation, particularly in India where a large portion of its 1.5 billion users reside.

WhatsApp told the Times that it works to remove people using hacked versions of its service, but said the ability to manipulate quotes wasn't a flaw.

WhatsApp has started rolling the five chat limit for forwards in India.

This limit is applicable in India for its 200 million users who use the app on a regular basis.

WhatsApp has released a string of updates in the recent weeks to tackle the issue fake news. "This week, WhatsApp is publishing a new video that explains the importance of the "forward" label and calls users to double check the facts when they are not sure who created the original message", WhatsApp said elaborating on the 27-second video clip.

Last month, the app announced limits of forwarding messages following threats by the Indian government to take action after more than 20 people were butchered by crazed mobs after being accused of child kidnapping and other crimes in viral messages circulated wildly on WhatsApp.
