Prosecutors Turn Toward Manafort's Alleged Bank Fraud In 2016

Manafort defense asks Gates about additional extramarital affairs

Manafort and Gates were the first two people indicted in Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign. He said there were 15 secret accounts. They expect to wrap up their case this week.

She said even though she worked with Gates a lot, it was clear to her that Manafort "knew what was going on" in most instances.

Gates also admitted, however, that the same tricks he used to help doctor and falsify records for Manafort he also deployed for his own personal gain in order to covertly wire funds out of Manafort's offshore accounts to line his own pockets.

"In essence, I was living beyond my means", Gates said.

Gates, who had been on stand for more than seven hours by conclusion of Tuesday's testimony, is anticipated to be on stand for an additional hour more of cross-examination, according to Manafort's attorneys. Referring to Manafort's pretrial confinement, Trump asked whether Manafort was being treated worse than Al Capone.

During the testimony, Manafort did not stare Gates down as he did Monday.

Paul Manafort has pleaded not guilty to 18 charges.

The judge overseeing the Paul Manafort trial, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis, has clashed with prosecutors in recent days.

Under questioning from Downing, Gates acknowledged he had to plead guilty to false statements after lying during a February interview with federal investigators.

The British Open sent a $154,000 payout to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood
That would explain why the accounts department had his bank account information. At least he can always say he won $154,000 at the Open'.

"Those appear to be substantially different, don't they?" defense attorney Richard Westling asked Magionos, showing her Manafort's signatures on a loan application to the Bank of California and one of the foreign banking documents.

Prosecutor Greg Andres recalled how the defense team had implied Gates was getting out of a 200-year prison sentence by testifying.

The 46-year-old, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government, began the day by describing how he helped Manafort evade U.S. taxes on millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did in Ukraine.

Gates said he falsely labeled hundreds of thousands of dollars in income as loans to reduce Manafort's tax liability.

Moreover, Manafort remains a central figure in the broader inquiry into the Trump campaign's dealings with Russia, including a 2016 Trump Tower meeting at which Russians promised "dirt" on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and his role in watering down the 2016 Republican Party platform position on Ukraine.

The tax and bank fraud charges in the current trial - the first of two Manafort is scheduled to face - however, have nothing to do with Manafort's work on the Trump campaign. Did Gates, Andres asked, have any doubt that the special counsel would "rip up your plea agreement" if he lied on the stand? Regarding a trading company Manafort had started with a partner in 2011, he asked with deep scepticism: "You're asking the jury to believe Mr Manafort authorised another US$250,000 as a bonus?"

Magionos said foreign bank documents and emails showed that Manafort repeatedly drew from bank accounts in Cyprus, the Grenadines and the United Kingdom to pay for expenditures in the U.S.

At the time he worked for Trump, jurors heard, Manafort's business in Ukraine had always been dried up, and his firm didn't have any clients.

The jury was reminded of the universe of vendors who've testified - the high-end suit sellers, the landscaper, the friend-turned-real-estate-agent, the general contractor - as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and IRS representatives walked through money flowing into their legitimate businesses from Manafort's foreign accounts.
