M7.0 quake strikes off Indonesia's Lombok island, causes small tsunamis

A July 29 quake killed 16 people and damaged hundreds of houses, some of which collapsed in Sunday evening's magnitude 7.0 temblor, killing those inside. Here's what travellers need to know.

At least 91 people have died and dozens are injured following a 6.4 magnitude natural disaster in Lombok Indonesia.

The quake, which struck at a depth of 15km off the north coast of Lombok, prompted a tsunami warning which was later lifted at 8.25pm local time.

Footage of the video at first showed the Imam and the congregation observing the prayer solemnly before the quake started.

The epicentre of the quake was the northern slope of Mount Rinjani, near where the previous quake struck a week ago.

According to BMKG, there were 20 aftershocks recorded up to 20.40pm local time.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told a news conference that damage was "massive" in the north of Lombok. Now to urgently evacuate tourists.

"There are now 447 New Zealanders registered on SafeTravel as being in Indonesia and nine registered as being in Lombok".

The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights from Lombok to help tourists leave.

No Australians are thought to be have been killed or injured in the deadly Lombok quake.

Another 200 were injured, Indonesian authorities said.

The powerful quake triggered panic among tourists and residents, and was also felt on the neighboring island of Bali.

Another strong quake has struck Indonesia's popular tourist island of Lombok.

"They were initially just little shocks but then they started to get bigger and bigger and people started to shout "earthquake", then all the staff panicked and rushed out of the building", the unnamed man said. There are parts of Lombok without power, he said. Around 1,000 tourists, including some Japanese, were stranded on a mountain as landslides blocked a trekking road.

Hundreds of tourists were evacuated from Mt Rinjani, Indonesia's second highest volcano, after the July 29 quake.

TRT World speaks with journalist Kanupriya Kapoor, who is reporting from Lombok, on how some locals in the affected areas are having to fend for themselves.

TV showed crying women consoling each other outside Lombok's airport.

The natural disaster was even stronger than another that struck last week, which measured 6.4 and killed 17 people in the region.
