Don't miss the meteor shower

The Perseids are set to peak late Sunday, August 12 into the early morning of Monday, August 13, but the spectacle is already beginning to heat up in the dark, mostly moonless evenings. But for those who want to experience the meteor shower amped up to 11, getting to a "dark sky park" is an absolute must.

The good news is you will be able to see the meteor shower with the naked eye.

Skygazers can witness up to a whopping 60 and 70 meteors every hours. Find a comfortable spot with as a wide a view of the night sky as possible, preferably away from light pollution, and just relax, lie back and look up. The annual Perseid meteor shower will be peaking this Saturday and Sunday night.

It's the biggest meteor shower of the year, so you better stay up late and grab your binoculars. The best Perseid performance we know of occurred in 1993, when the peak rate topped 300 meteors per hour, Cooke said.

The Perseid meteor shower is said to be the best of the year.

The event will coincide with the new moon, when the moon is essentially invisible in the sky.

Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Coming This Weekend
It is said that the Perseid shower commemorates the time when Zeus visited Danae, the mother of Perseus, in a shower of gold. Make sure to look up this weekend as the Perseid Meteor Shower puts on its annual show in the skies above South Florida.

Shooting stars will be visible north and south of the equator, though observers in mid-northern latitudes will have the best views, according to NASA.

Even better news still, the moon won't be spoiling the view. Best of all, constellations and the Milky Way should be highly visible due to a New Moon on August 11, meaning there will not be as much light to drown out the stars.

One of the most popular meteor showers of the year is expected to peak this weekend.

The best time to view the Perseid meteor shower in the United Kingdom is around midnight and during the very earliest hours of the morning. The meteors will appear to streak away from and out of the constellations of Perseus and Cassiopeia. "You can look anywhere you want to - even directly overhead".

And, stray shooting stars will likely be visible until the end of the month. That's when the peak will start to build as Earth drifts through the most dense part of a cloud of cosmic debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which passes by our planet and the sun once every 133 years.
