One dead, several wounded after Saudi Arabia 'intercepts Yemen missile'

"Today's attack in Saada was a legitimate military operation. and was carried out in accordance with global humanitarian law", the coalition said in the Arabic-language statement carried by SPA.

Saudi Arabia's air defense forces intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched towards the Kingdom's southwestern Jizan region by Yemen's armed Houthi militias, on Wednesday.

Johannes Bruwer, head of delegation for the ICRC in Yemen, said: "Scores killed, even more injured, most under the age of ten".

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and their allies intervened in the conflict the following March, aiming to push back the Houthis and restore the internationally recognised government to power.

Saudi Arabia said it shot down a rebel missile, with shrapnel leaving a Yemeni resident dead and 11 wounded.

He accused the rebels of using children as "tools and covers for their terrorist acts".

The military alliance says it does not target civilians and has set up an investigation committee into alleged mass casualty air strikes which have mostly cleared the coalition of any blame.

A week ago, at least 55 civilians were killed and 170 others wounded in a series of attacks on the rebel-held Red Sea port city of Hudaydah.

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks.

Nearly 10,000 people - two-thirds of them civilians - have been killed and 55,000 others injured in the fighting, according to the United Nations.

The imposed war has so far failed to achieve its goal, thanks to firm resistance mounted by Yemeni troops and Houthi fighters, but has unleashed the world's worst humanitarian crisis in the poorest Arabian Peninsula state.
