10 millionth Ford Mustang gallops off the assembly line

Ford Mustang 4-cylinder 2018 UK first drive review rear cornering

That auto, with a serial number ending in 001, was purchased in Canada in April 1964 by an airline pilot named Stanley Tucker, who gave it back to Ford in exchange for the 1 millionth Mustang in March 1966.

Ford's 10 millionth Mustang rolled off the line at its Flat Rock assembly plant near Detroit, Michigan today, a major milestone for the best-selling sports auto of the last half-century. The pony auto has also called plants in San Jose, California, and Metuchen, New Jersey, home over the years. There's good reason for the specifications, too. Having been immortalised in pop culture with movies like Bullit, Gone In Sixty Seconds or more recently, Need For Speed or songs like "Mustang Sally", the pony auto - turned muscle vehicle is something everyone loves. The auto is a GT V8 Convertible finished in Wimbledon White, the same hue as the 1964.5 Mustang bearing VIN-001. The first serialized Mustang off the line also carried a V8, but its transmission had half the forward speeds and just 164 horsepower. The owners plan to spell out the milestone production number with their cars and the automaker has arranged for a flyover salute by a P-51 Mustang fighter plane.

"Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favourite around the world", Jim Farley, Ford's president of global markets, said in a news release. "Mustang is a smile-maker in any language". The event saw a parade of five decades worth of Pony cars cruising from Dearborn to Flat Rock where the Mustang is now manufactured. There's an exclusive 480bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine under the bonnet, plus distinctive design and trim tailored as a throwback to Steve McQueen's vehicle from the 1968 film.

It's not all been smooth sailing, however.

But don't go looking for the 10 millionth in showrooms.
