Samsung begins mass production of industry-first 4-bit consumer SSDs

Samsung Starts Mass Production of'First 4 Bit Consumer SSD

Samsung has included a three-year warranty with the QLC drive anyways. A new round of NAND flash production at Samsung could finally make SSDs in the multi-terabyte range affordable and mainstream.

Storing more bits per cell in QLC drives inevitably means lower performance and endurance when compared to TLC, but Samsung claims it has managed to maintain the performance level of existing TLC drives.

Based on the company's 64-layer vertical NAND (V-NAND) stacked design, Samsung's announcement comes with a world's first: the confirmation that the company will release the market's first quad-level cell (QLC) 4TB SSD for consumer use, based on SATA connectivity - and it's doing so using a three-bit controller, oddly.

The company says that when data stored within a memory cell is bumped up from three bits to four, maintaining optimum performance and speed becomes "considerably more hard".

Samsung said it plans to introduce several 4-bit consumer SSDs later this year, with 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities in a 2.5-inch form factor.

Russia: Saudi Arabia has right to reject Canada's interference
The divestment came after Canada's foreign ministry condemned the kingdom's arrest of a prominent women's rights activist . Saudi Arabia shot back on Sunday, expelling the Canadian ambassador and freezing new trade with Canada.

The new 4-bit (QLC, quad-level cell) SATA SSD drives are "expected to bring a new level of efficiency to consumer SSDs".

"Samsung's new 4-bit SATA SSD will herald a massive move to terabyte-SSDs for consumers", said executive VP of memory sales & marketing at Samsung, Jaesoo Han.

And if you're anxious about reliability, know that these drives will have a pretty generous three-year warranty. Samsung is increasing storage density by 33 percent with these chips, so it would be nice to see prices fall by that much, too.

In addition to high-capacity SSDs, Samsung also revealed that with its new chip, it will be able to "efficiently produce a 128GB memory card for smartphones that will lead the charge toward higher capacities for high-performance memory storage". We now have no indication on pricing.
