China calls on United States to be ‘cool-headed’ in trade war

President Trump has threatened to escalate his trade war with China once again, asking the Commerce Department to consider a new 25% tariff on $200 billion in annual imports from China.

USA trade representatives are trying to re-engage China in trade talks to de-escalate tensions between the two countries.

Fast forward to today, when the WSJ gives some further color, noting that while "the administration didn't spell out a particular rationale for increasing the tariff...."

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration imposed 25 per cent tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods July 6 and sources say more penalties could come.

The US has already imposed 25pc tariffs on $34b worth of Chinese imports, with another $16b to be targeted in coming weeks.

If these potential new tariffs get approved, it begs the question of who will bear the increased costs of bikes and bike related parts, accessories and goods?

Urging cooler heads in Washington to prevail, Mr Wang made the case that United States tariffs would hurt its own consumers and businesses, given how globalised trade is today.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative's Office declined to comment on the proposed tariff rate increase or on whether changing them would alter the deadlines laid out for comment period before implementation. "But there's nothing you can do about 25".

Ed Bryztwa, director of global trade at the American Chemistry Council, was especially concerned about the additional tariffs, even before the threat of more than doubling the tariff rate.

In measured and balanced responses, China made two points.

Bike Europe has reported that the Chinese government will not tolerate blackmail from the American adminsitration and that they would respond in kind.

While raising the bar on countermeasures at each point, China has also knocked the doors of the WTO dispute settlement body with trade disputes against the US's illegal and unilateral crowbar trade measures. "We would advise the United States to correct its attitude and not try to engage in blackmail".

Washington is preparing to also impose tariffs on an extra $16 billion of goods in coming weeks, and Trump has warned he may ultimately put them on over half a billion dollars of goods - roughly the total amount of US imports from China a year ago.

"If we're going to use tariffs, this gives us more flexibility and it's a more meaningful threat", he said, adding that Trump's pressure strategy will not work if he does not resolve trade disputes with U.S. allies such as the European Union, Mexico and Canada.
