They took a while to warm up but Fiji got their Rugby World Cup Sevens campaign off to a winning start against Japan on Saturday all the same, winning 35-10 after trailing at half-time.

Ireland's poor handling of the kick-offs came to the fore again as first Geduld completed his brace, before Soyizwapi scored his hat-trick try and fourth in quick succession.

France take on New Zealand in the quarters, while World Series winners South Africa belted Ireland 45-7 and will play Scotland on day two.

Five years ago, the New Zealand men's and women's sevens teams won their respective World Cup titles. Fiji scored a consolation try with time expired.

Wales tried their best to get back into the game and nearly did so when Afon Bagshaw went over confidently, but Ireland were not to be denied and sealed the victory with a Shane Daly try in the last minute.

Meanwhile, World Rugby has named Sarah Goss, Michaela Blyde and Portia Woodman in a women's Dream Team.

There was controversy when Fiji were awarded a second try soon afterwards through Amenoni Nasilasila, despite replays appearing to show he had put a foot in touch before scoring.

Round of 16: Fiji 12-19 Spain, France 33-7 Japan, Russia 24-14 South Africa, Canada 43-19 Brazil, Australia 34-5 Papua New Guinea, New Zealand 57-0 Mexico, England 14-19 Ireland, USA 38-7 China.
