How Meghalaya Defines The Time We Live In

"The last 4,200 years of Earth's history now named as Meghalayan Age - Geologists have now classified it as being a distinct age and are calling it as the Meghalayan Age".

"The two most prominent shifts occur at about 4,300 and about 4,100 years before present, so the mid-point between the two would be 4,200 years before present, and this is the age that we attribute to the [Meghalayan golden spike]", explained Walker, who led the global team of Holocene scientists that developed the proposal for the epoch's division. The climatic event, a destructive drought, was likely triggered by a shift in oceans and the atmospheric circulation, according to BBC. Both ages are marked by ice cores found in Greenland. There were droughts as a result of the climatic changes which continued for over a 200-year period and hence resulted in migrations and changes in human settlements in Egypt, Greece, Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia, the Indus valley and the Yangtze river valley.

When ICS commission members proposed the boundary in a 2012 paper, they laid out more evidence for the mega-drought: dust found in Peruvian ice cores and lake shoreline deposits that show lakes were drying up in Africa.

Sediments collected by an global team of researchers, including those from a stalagmite from a cave in Meghalaya helped define the smallest climatic event in Earth's history.

According to the order of the things, there is the Greenlandian age that is between 11700 years to 8326 years ago, then comes the Northgrippian, which was 8326 year to 4250 years ago and now, Meghalayan age, which started 4250 years ago and is still ticking.

These all record major climate events. The Northgrippian, also known as the "middle Holocene" began 8,300 years ago after an abrupt cooling event.

Novichok victim Charlie Rowley is discharged from hospital
Wilkinson said that while Rowley had been discharged, it was a "day tinged with sadness for everyone" as they remembered Sturgess. Investigators said last week that they had identified the small bottle found in Rowley's home as the source of the poison.

Some scientists, however, are not convinced about the move to label a new Meghalayan Age, especially since deliberations are still going on about identifying a new time period - tentatively called the Anthropocene - that would recognize the impact of human activity on the planet.

Furthermore, IUGS issued a statement citing, "This is a key achievement for the International Union of Geological Sciences and particularly for its Commission on Stratigraphy".

Such events are characterized in sedimentary strata accumulated over time as sediment types, fossils, and chemical isotopes are contained within them, recording the history of our world and the physical and biological events that shaped them.

These finding has helped scientists to understand the past of our planet better. The Meghalayan Age is now the youngest of the three phases, stretching from 4,200 years ago until the present time. As the most inexperienced unit of the Geologic Time Scale is defined based on the timing of this events.

Expressing his disappointment with the new ICS stages, he told the BBC: "We have lots of new definitions that perhaps now contradict the Anthropocene Working Group and go against what most scientists perceive to be the most important change on Earth in the last 10,000 years".
