BA sorry for Heathrow IT-crash delays and cancellations

Reuters reported last night that according to Heathrow's departure board, a number of British Airways flights were canceled or being delayed by several hours at the airport.

About 30 minutes later, Heathrow confirmed that the airport was fully open and operations were resuming as normal.

Another said: "We're really not getting any information at the moment".

Hundreds of passengers were told to return on Thursday.

One passenger said: "They just said to me "stay in the queue".

A number of planes at Heathrow Airport have been disrupted after its control tower was forced to evacuate.

She added that flights are operating today, now the supplier "has resolved the issue", but didn't explain what the root cause was when IT Pro asked.

The airline blamed a "combination" of problems - including a systems issue and the temporary closure of Heathrow's air traffic control tower.

The outage caused delays and cancellations, with BA's Terminal 5 particularly badly affected.

"We are doing all we can to keep any knock-on disruption to our services to a minimum and are sorry for the disruption to our customers' travel plans".

It said on Twitter to passengers asking for an update on the sitution: "Heathrow experienced a fire alarm activation that impacted the operation of the airfield for a short while".

The failure is a blow as airlines gear up for the peak holiday period.
