Trump slams European Union over $5 billion fine on Google

The EU has fined Google a record €4.3bn over Android antitrust

But ahead of the meeting Mr Trump fired an angry warning shot at Brussels.

It has not been a good day for Google after it was hit with a record-breaking fine totaling $5 billion or €4.3 billion by the European Commission in relation to Android and the way the company uses its position to bundle search and Chrome with handsets throughout the continent. "They truly have taken advantage of the US, but not for long!"

It it fails to overturn it, the company will have 90 days to change its practices or risk facing an even larger fine.

Google also countered the EU's statement which said that the tech giant has prevented manufacturers wishing to pre-install Google apps by saying that it's easy to remove a preloaded app and replace it with an alternative.

Following the EU's decision to slam Google with an exorbitant fine for anti-competitive behavior - an unprecedented $5 billion - CEO Sundar Pichai published a memo where he outlines why Google requires smartphone makers to set Chrome and Search as default services if they want access to the Google Play Store.

Margrethe Vestager, the European Commission's competition chief, said that allowed Google to illegally establish dominance in the mobile search market. Denying rivals a chance to innovate and compete on the merits. They have denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile sphere.

In an interview with CBS in Scotland last week, Trump described the European Union as a "foe".

Despite the ongoing tensions, Mr Juncker insisted he was "upbeat and relaxed" ahead of his U.S. trip. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade.

It nearly doubles the €2.42b - about United States dollars $2.8b - that the European Union levied against the company past year over promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of its search results.
