Corning announces Gorilla Glass 6 to be stronger than ever

Corning's new glass will let your smartphone survive multiple drops

Corning, known for its glass technology that can be found on a countless array of products, has now introduced the latest version of its glass, Gorilla Glass 6.

Consumers expect all manufacturers to continually be progressing their offerings and making them better with each release.

Corning's Gorilla glass has been a standard on every major smartphone for quite some time.

Channing Frye was a dependable player, locker-room presence and fan favorite for parts of three seasons with the Cavaliers . Cleveland lost LeBron James to the Lakers this offseason but is aiming to stay competitive in 2018-19.

John Bayne, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass, said that as consumers become more dependent on their smartphones, the opportunity for potentially damaging drops is also on the rise.

Earlier versions of Gorilla Glass have been used on all previous iPhone models since Steve Jobs chose the company to provide screen covers in 2006. This new design change has been put in place to counteract the extreme likelihood that a smartphone will be dropped on multiple occasions. This new composition makes it easier to chemically increase levels of compression which, thus, “enabled Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage”. This new Gorilla Glass 6 is made from an "entirely new material" that can withstand multiple drops.

Gorilla Glass 6 is the first new formulation from Corning in two years, and it's also a step in a slightly new direction for the company. "With both its aesthetic and performance advantages, glass is on the right side of the technology curve and will continue to be the material of choice for mobile consumer electronics", said Scott Forester, division vice president, Marketing and Innovation Products, Corning Gorilla Glass. We will likely see the first smartphones utilizing this breakthrough hitting the market before the year is out.
