Bellhops CEO gives new employee auto after walking 20 miles to work

News outlets report that hours before his first day working for Bellhops movers, Walter Carr set out from Homewood at midnight, making it to Pelham by 4 a.m. Friday.

Inspired by Carr's story, Lamey started a GoFundMe campaign to help him out and set the campaign's goal at $2,000.

Carr told the officer that he was walking to work. They gave him a ride and took him out for an early breakfast at Whataburger; they insisted on buying him lunch, too.

Knighten and officers Klint Rhodes and Carl Perkinson then took Carr to a church so he could be in a safe place before it was time to go to work, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Carr told him he was walking to work and still had and other fifteen miles to go.

Duffey picked up the student and drove him to the house of Jenny Lamey, who was moving with her family that day.

Carr arrived at his job site before his colleagues to help a client move their belongings. "He declined and said he could go ahead and get started".

Jenny Lamey, the customer waiting for a removalist at her home at 8am, instead received a knock at the door at 6.30am from the officer and Mr Carr.

When Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home in New Orleans in 2005, his family moved to the Birmingham area, and Carr continued to pursue his high school diploma, graduating from G.W. Carver High School as the only boy in his class from the school's Academy of Health Sciences. He and his partners were concerned for his welfare and stopped to check on him.

"When we saw that, we were truly blown away and thought this is everything we are about", Marklin said.

Lamey then asked Carr to tell the crew just what he did to get there that day.

"I think the reason we were so compelled to help is-we've had the values of heart and grit all along as a company-but I don't think anyone took it to that level", Marklin said.

"Chris and I woke up around 5:45am to get everything staged and ready for the movers". Pictures of the meeting were shared by the Pelham Police Department yesterday, July 16, showing a tearful Walter after receiving his auto.

She explained the weird episode and paid tribute to Mr Carr's eagerness in a Facebook post.

"I just can't tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey", she said. She described Carr's humble, kind nature and exceptional work ethic.
