Trump claims victory over North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to hike spending on defence

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrives in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, to attend the NATO Summit.

He said the US "pays tens of Billions of Dollars too much to subsidize Europe" and demanded that members meet their pledge to spend 2 percent of GDP on defence, which "must ultimately go to 4%!" But there was little evidence other leaders had bowed to his wishes on that front.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called an emergency session of all 29 allies to address Trump's demands, and the United States leader said his hectoring had paid off.

French President Emmanuel Macron told quite a different version.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump landed at Stansted Airport, 40 miles northeast of the British capital Thursday afternoon local time.

Trump later called the meeting a "success".

Perry said America supports open competition and looked forward to Monday's much-anticipated summit between Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

There had been concern that President Trump might leave the alliance.

Hundreds of demonstrators chanted outside the USA ambassador's residence where Trump was staying on the outskirts of London, providing a preview of the forceful protests expected during his two-day British stay.

Although Trump administration officials point to the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, Trump's itinerary in England will largely keep him out of central London, where significant protests are expected.

"Tremendous progress has been made, everyone's agreed to substantially up their commitment, they're going to up it at levels they've never thought of before", Trump told a press conference before leaving for a visit to Britain. "We committed ourselves to spending a bit more".

Belgium favored in third-place match over England
Southgate said: "We have a captain whose first thought all tournament has been how can he help the team to progress. They have real humility. "That will be the challenge".

Wednesday, he criticized Germany for approving a pipeline to bring Russian natural gas through the Baltic Sea. "It reaffirms a commitment to 2 percent in 2024".

More recently ties have been strained by a probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and suspected collusion with the Trump campaign, as well as by the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain.

He insisted that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was as united as ever, despite the very public rift.

THE FACTS: Trump has said this before; it's not true.

Mr Trump also warned the European Union he will make them pay for years of "taking advantage" of the United States - describing the situation as a "disgrace".

President Trump says he will discuss Syria and nuclear proliferation with Putin. "I love the United States but I love getting along with Russian Federation and China and other countries".

"So that was on Barack Obama's watch". And should there be a discussion of raising it? - which is something that President Trump has suggested, as you say - raising it to say 4 percent.

"I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me".

Mr Trump's early-morning tweets from Brussels had been typically critical. He's saying that he thinks that he might be able to have a good relationship with Putin and that maybe he could even become a friend. "I'm a very stable genius".

Stoltenberg, stepping in - not for the first time - as peacemaker between Trump and the other 28, called a special closed-door session, the first in a decade, with most officials and the invited guests ushered out, to allow the alliance's principal leaders to remonstrate with Trump.

NATO, a pillar of the global order, emerged from a two-day confrontation with President Donald Trump on Thursday intact but distracted and shaken, a further challenge to the alliance as it faces an expansionist Russian Federation and growing authoritarianism among some of its own members.
