The video rental chain in 2000 notoriously made one of the worst business decisions of all time when it rejected a young company called Netflix whose CEO Reed Hastings offered to partner with the chain and run its online operations - Hastings was "laughed out of the room" as one report put it.

As for the fate of that store, the future looks good.

From 9,000 stores to just one.

"We regret to inform you that our North Pole store will be closing", Blockbuster Alaska wrote on its Facebook page.

The two Alaska closures will leave the Blockbuster in Bend, Ore., as the last store standing. He added that his team had explained to people involved with Oliver's show that the stores would probably not be open much longer.

Blockbuster might be on its last legs in the USA, but a handful of Australian stores and kiosks are keeping the brand alive.

Dylan Groenewegen powers to victory on stage seven of Tour de France
Laurent Pichon, another French rider with Fortuneo-Samsic, then also got away alone for a spell. Van Avermaet said. "But everyone kind of enjoyed it - the first day we could really relax".

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Kevin Daymude, Blockbuster Alaska general manager who said lease increases ultimately led to the demise of these final two stores: one in Anchorage and one in Fairbanks. Streaming has its advantages; there is a reason it has taken over the movie world.

Blockbuster gave in and declared bankruptcy in 2010, and its remaining 1,700 stores were bought by Dish Network in 2011. By 2013, there were only 13 stores left in America.

Daymude says the buzz from the Oliver connection brought business to the store. Both Kelli Vey and I (Kevin Daymude) have been with the company since 1991 and have had great memories throughout our career.

"It's always kind of a kick in the trousers every time we close a store", explained Payne.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years", the post continued.

"Alaska had always been - I always thought they'd outlast us", she said. "The loyalty was huge, I mean they were like family and we'll miss them desperately".
