The Queen recalled how her father was the first member of her family to qualify as an RAF pilot and served alongside the service's founder Lord Trenchard.

The flypast was a centrepiece of events celebrating the RAF's centenary, with lines of invited personnel given a prime viewing position directly outside the palace gates.

While some have interpreted Charlotte's post-christening comment as a cheeky reminder to the photographers of her status as a royal insider, I think perhaps she just wants to make sure they know not to hustle over to Clarence House for the reception. She was left the late-Victorian brooch by Lady Jardine in 1981.

Earlier, the royals and more than 2,200 people packed Westminster Abbey for a service also attended by Theresa May, defence secretary Gavin Williamson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
