It is also just the sixth Grand Slam final this decade to be contested between multiple Slam champions; the previous five were all won by Serena Williams, who defeated Justine Henin at the 2010 Australian Open, Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros 2013, Victoria Azarenka at the 2013 US Open, Sharapova once again at the 2015 Australian Open and Venus Williams at the 2017 Australian Open.

The 11th-seeded Kerber beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal on Centre Court on Thursday.

"This is not inevitable for me, I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it to be honest", said Williams after her semi-final victory on Thursday.

"It's no secret I had a super tough delivery".

Kerber, in contrast, bides her time, working the back of the court to get everything back over the net, often kneeling to get low enough to reach shots. I'm really proud to be back in the Wimbledon final, especially after past year where things weren't like I was expecting.

"It's like, come on guys, this is pretty awesome".

"It's insane. I don't even know how to feel, you know, because literally, didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back", said Williams who returned to tournament play in March after a 13-month absence.

United States tennis star Serena Williams has outplayed Julia Görges of Germany 6-2 6-4 to propel herself into the Wimbledon final just 10 months after giving birth to her daughter.

Seeded 25th, the 36-year-old cruised through the opening set with consummate ease and conceded just two games as the German struggled from the outset.

Williams is playing her fourth tournament since becoming a mother and is now the favourite to win the title.

But against Williams, who hit the fewest unforced errors among the four remaining players before the semifinals, she had a mountain to climb. "I think she's incredibly confident", she said. "Yeah, I have to be ready for the match of my life". "I love watching her play", she said of the tenacious world No.10, adding, "she was going through the draw very well". "I literally didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back in 16 months". Her mobility is solid, her serve is incredible, and she's been taken to three sets just once all tournament.

Although Williams is back in the final, this still threatens to be an extraordinary Wimbledon. Autograph hunters, selfie-seekers, memorabilia collectors, young, old, girls and boys, asking her to smile, telling her to keep going, calling her an inspiration. "She's trying to go faster than her body will allow her to go".

Serena Williams will contest a Grand Slam final for the 12th successive year.

In the early stages Goerges was brimming with confidence, her serve and forehand getting some success that suggested an upset was not out of the question.
