Puerto Rican T-shirt video controversy results in officer's resignation

Officer Who Didn’t Step In When Woman In Puerto Rico Shirt Was Harassed Resigns

A police officer seen in a video "doing nothing", while a woman was being harassed by a drunk man for wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt, has resigned. The recording, taken by the woman involved, shows a man, identified by the police as Timothy Trybus, demanding to know why she has a Puerto Rican flag shirt on and whether the woman, Mia Irizarry, is a US citizen.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said 62-year-old Timothy Trybus was charged Thursday with two counts of felony hate crime.

He has been charged with disorderly conduct and assault.

"That officer did absolutely nothing, he did zero", Irizarry said during the video.

'If she's an American citizen, why is she wearing that s**t?' Trybus shouts. The agency tweeted Monday that an investigation of the officer is ongoing. I do not feel comfortable with him here.

The incident in question occurred June 14 in Caldwell Woods Forest Preserve on the Far Northwest Side.

Several different versions of the video have appeared across social media, but they all show a man, later identified by authorities as Trybus, berating a woman.

Trump calls for allies to spend more on defense at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit
This has been brought up by other presidents. "I think these countries have to step it up , not over a 10 year period, they have to step it up immediately".

Puerto Rico is a USA territory, and its residents are American citizens. The officer is seen walking away.

The Forest Preserves of Cook County had previously said the officer had been placed on desk duty as it investigated the incident. "At the same time, this video will help inform ongoing officer training so we can all learn from this unfortunate episode".

"If the investigation confirms the officer did not take appropriate steps to ensure public safety, disciplinary action will be swift", Forest Preserves spokeswoman Stacina Stagner told ABC News via email earlier this week.

Mr Trybus continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him.

"I felt so drawn out", she said in the interview.

There was also a comment at the end "Why don't you and your people go back where you came from". Other officers eventually arrived and arrested the man. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in U.S. presidential primaries, but not in presidential elections.

I was new and I was dressed somewhat casually because we were just returning from a Puerto Rican celebration and my daughter was carrying a Puerto Rican flag. This is not the America we all believe in'.
