UK police warn World Cup revellers after "shocking behaviour" at weekend

Harry Maguire of England celebrates after the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Round of 16 match between Colombia and England at Spartak Stadium

Britain's police chiefs warned the British public on Monday not to repeat the "shocking behaviour" which followed England's victory over Sweden on Saturday at the soccer World Cup in Russian Federation.

Recent games have seen fans pile on to the streets of Reading after the match, forcing the police to close Broad Street to allow crowds to disperse.

And Thames Valley Police bosses say the force is well prepared. There have been a number of incidents in the Thames Valley over the last few weeks ranging from an ambulance being damaged through to public disorder.

Police dealt with 387 incidents and were inundated with 999 calls after England's quarter-final victory against Sweden on Saturday.

A spokesman for Aldi said: "If England reach the World Cup Final - sorry, when England reach the World Cup Final - we're gonna close all our stores in England early at 3pm on Sunday, July 15".

"It is incredibly disheartening to see over 300 incidents of alcohol fuelled disorder from a minority of mindless individuals", Mark Roberts, head of football policing for the NPCC, said in a statement.

"Numerous roads across the country were blocked, stopping emergency vehicles getting to people in need and an ambulance is now off the road while being repaired".

He said shops were damaged and people abused and assaulted, while other fans climbed on buses and cars, causing damage to the vehicles and in some cases themselves.

"There is absolutely no excuse for this type of senseless behaviour".

Police, Crime and Victim's Commissioner, Ron Hogg, said: "It's great that so many people are able to support a successful England football team this summer, and I wish them all the best in the semi-final".
