Astros send reliever Ken Giles to Triple-A

HOUSTON TX- JULY 10 Manager AJ Hinch #14 of the Houston Astros takes the ball from Ken Giles #53 in the ninth inning against the Oakland Athletics at Minute Maid Park

A day after another blowup on the mound, the Astros have sent struggling closer Ken Giles to Triple-A Fresno.

The Astros were up by four to start the ninth inning against Oakland on Tuesday night when Giles took over and gave up three straight singles which cut the lead to 4-1.

The Houston Astros won Tuesday's game against the A's in ridiculous fashion, but it wasn't all smiles for the AL West leaders.

With the Phillies, Giles struck out 151 batters in 115.2 innings, allowed just 20 earned runs over that time and finished fourth in rookie of the year voting his first season. Giles appeared to say, "F-k you, man", to Hinch as he handed him the ball. Houston lost 10-9 in 14 innings.

"I did hear about it", Hinch told reporters. That stuff happens in the heat of battle. "It if turns out it was at me, we'll talk about it". He punched himself in the face after another bad outing.

Giles' troubles date back to the playoffs last season.

Then, May 27, Giles came into the game with an 8-3 lead in the ninth over the Indians and allowed three runs to score before leaving without recording an out.
